By Danielle Wirsansky on August 4, 2019

If you need new employees and college students are your ideal candidates, then you need to find the best ways to target and cater to this demographic. The better your appeal and the wider your reach, the better student candidates you will turn up. So how do you find the best student candidate to work for your company? By marketing the position more exclusively towards students! Read on for ways to market a position specifically toward those potential student employees.

Flyering

A great way to make sure that college students know that you’re hiring is to flyer and hang up posters on college campuses. If you live in an area with only one college, be sure to hit that college campus up! If you live in an area with many colleges, you can choose to focus exclusively on one campus or you can spread the wealth and advertise at both depending on what you are looking for.

You can hang the posters up across campus, in common areas, on bulletin boards in each building, in bathrooms, in coffee shops, and more! The more places you advertise in, the more students you will reach. If you want to target students of a particular major, be sure to put up posters in places that they hang out in. This could be in the building that houses their major or in the library that caters to them.

You can even pass out flyers at special events on campus to get the word out! Just be sure that no matter where you are postering or flyering that you have permission to be doing so. Some colleges are stricter about people putting up posters on their campus, so you need to make sure you are following all the rules regarding it. Otherwise, your posters will be taken down and your hard work at having them posted will go right down the drain. You can also get in trouble because the university knows exactly who you are and how to contact you (if you did a good job with the poster, anyways). They might even ban you from campus if you keep violating campus rules. That could give you a bad reputation with the very students that you are trying to recruit. Avoid unnecessary troubles and be sure to follow the rules about flyering and hanging posters!

Facebook Groups

Many colleges have a network of Facebook groups that you can only join if you have a university-affiliated email address. Within that network, there are generally several jobs & internship groups. If you, as an employer, do not have access, see if you can find a student that belongs to these groups to post on your behalf. These are students helping other students find jobs. It is a safe space for them to get opinions and recommendations from others, as well as the inside scoop on what others know about a specific place of employment. If your business has a good reputation with college students, it will likely be a popular place to share new and available job postings.

Sometimes there are facebook groups that exist for college students looking for jobs that do not require university-affiliated email addresses, where you are also welcome to post your job openings, though you might get mobbed by students who are more desperate or a poor fit for the job opening that you have.

Job Fair

Many universities also host job fairs that are exclusively for their students. That is a great way to access the student employee market. You will only get students who are truly willing to make the extra effort and that want a job. This will also help you to connect with a university’s student job center, which might help you find potential employees in the future.

You will be able to meet with candidates in person and make a first impression with them and vice versa. You will get a lot of potential candidates at once, so you will know if you have enough candidates for the position or if you need to go to further lengths to fill your open positions.

And since you are there in person when working a job fair, you can get students to fill out job applications or do interviews with you on the spot, which better helps you to gauge where you are in the hiring process and better narrow down your candidates to the very best potential student employee of them all.

Follow these tips to market your open position to the best of your ability. In doing so, you will get the best crop of applicants that you can for the job, which means that you will be more likely to find the best candidate to fill the role. Good luck on your hiring journey!
