The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Is Outdated!

By Ace Francis Prado on December 17, 2018

When I was a child, watching cartoons, reality TV, and movies were big milestones. There were many shows I could never miss, like “Sister, Sister,” “That’s So Raven,” “Flavor of Love,” “American Idol,” “Miss Universe” and of course, The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. As a four-year-old watching Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, Gisele Bundchen, Heidi Klum, Selita Ebanks, etc., strut down the runway, I was given all the access to every interview and segment.

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is known to be the most glamorous and most viewed television event in the world. It’s so widely viewed that the constant television commercials and YouTube advertisements will always keep you remembering. CBS always televises this event. According to The Washington Post, more than 12.4 million people watched these supermodels strut down the catwalk in high heel stilettos. Throughout the past decade, the viewership has started to decline. The Washington Post stated that 5 million people watched last year’s show in Shanghai.

This television production is elaborated with fake snow falling from the ceiling, a $1 million fantasy bra, and angel wings that can expand three times the height of a model. You can’t beat that! It seems the world is in awe after leaving the fantasy world where everyone is skinny and tall.

VS Fashion Show fails to attract viewers

This year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show received terrible backlash from fashion critics, audience members, and electronic reviews. The holiday special was televised on ABC instead of CBS. The VS Fashion Show was always broadcast on CBS years prior. According to the Seattle Times, 3.27 million people tuned in to watch the show. It is one of the worst televised events in broadcast history! Fashion critic Robin Givhan wrote a horrible review explaining how the VS Fashion show became a bore.

No plus-size/transgender models, Goodbye VS

Although Victoria’s Secret may found a way to silence many critics and audiences with innovative and creative landscapes. Robin Givhan states that “this one-hour TV special is not worthy, and the models have similar body types.” Many social media users, celebrities, and consumers are upset because Ed Razek still refuses to include plus-sized and transgender models in the fashion show. Celebrities such as Rihanna and Tess Holliday argued with Ed for having narrow-minded beauty ideals.

Last year, Ashley Graham called out VS for not featuring plus-sized women in the show. She posted an Instagram photo of herself wearing angel wings stating “Got my wings! … #AdditionElle wings! #thickthighssaveslives

Standing next to Robin Givan and who is NOT

Victoria’s Secret supermodel Behati Prinsloo reminds everyone that it is just fashion. She told Elle that people are not understanding that it is just a show and not about promoting negative or positive body types.

Singer and LGBTQ+ member Halsey was upset that Ed negatively commented about people who are transsexual. After the show was televised on national television, she vented on social media how she felt about the comment.

For the past few decades, VS captured the audience with elaborate wings, bejeweled bras, and talented models leaving people in awe. The brand made their debut on a global stage in Shanghai. However, the brand faces problems on body positivity. For the past few years, Victoria’s Secret toned down the sex kitten marketing campaigns according to QZ reports.

There is some fierce competition in the market as Aerie and American Eagle have been eating up Victoria’s Secret’s market by promoting body positive campaigns, which VS has failed at doing. Everyone continues to discuss Rihanna’s Fashion Show at New York Fashion Week. “Savage X Fenty” presented all sizes on the catwalk. Ri Ri’s goal is to enforce all races and cultures.

Victoria’s Secret’s beauty and sex appeal were trendy back in the early 1990s. The recruitment of Heidi Klum, Tyra Banks, and Gisele Bundchen was a huge success which put the company in the mainstream. Well, the truth now is the fashion show’s not enough and changing marketing campaigns is not enough to restore its popularity and glory. Renewed success will start from listening to consumers and the audiences who are attracted to the clothing.
