Best Resources for Temple Journalism Majors

By Ashley Paskill on August 26, 2018

Journalism is a tough major, especially at Temple. Everyone dreads having to take AV Newsgathering and Philadelphia Neighborhoods, though these classes do expose students to real-world journalism. Journalism is super competitive, so it is important to have experience outside of the classroom as well. Luckily for Temple journalism students, there are resources available to help them through.

1. Lynda.com

Lynda is a website for learning new skills and brushing up on things you may have learned in class. For journalism majors, this website has tutorials for anything from Premier to InDesign. The site offers courses for beginners and experts alike. You can also learn about building a career and the skills needed to succeed. Many courses come with a certificate of completion, which looks great on a resume and portfolio. Temple students are given free access to the site, so take advantage of it while you can.

2. Klein Connect

Klein Connect is Klein College of Media and Communication’s own career website. Its main feature is a wide database of jobs and internships available to both current students and alumni alike. However, it has so much more. It has a listing of communications events being held at Temple, such as Klein-specific career fairs, resume and cover letter workshops, and employer information workshops that you can RSVP for. It even has the option to set up an appointment with the Klein Career Center.

3. Klein College of Media and Communication Career Center

Klein’s Career Center extends beyond Klein Connect. The career center is open to help students get their resume and cover letters checked. They have a wide variety of resources, such as sample resumes and events. Students also have the opportunity to become Verified by Klein by completing a wide variety of career challenges that can help students find opportunities through Temple and even through LinkedIn. Students can meet with other students as well as with a career counselor.

4. Technology Resources.

Temple journalism majors utilize a wide variety of technology, from cameras to computer programs. However, many students do not have these resources available to them, so Temple and Klein help with this. The Tech Center has computers, both Macs and PCs, that have a variety of programs that journalism majors need to complete projects for their classes. Klein’s Equipment Office has a variety of cameras, microphones, recorders, and accessories that students can check out to use out in the field as they produce stories for classes.
