Three have died and over 100 were injured when a Amtrak passenger train derailed in Washington state yesterday.

CNN reports, “The Amtrak Cascades 501 was making its first trip on a new service route when the train ran off the track near DuPont, spilling 13 cars off an Interstate 5 overpass onto rush hour traffic below, authorities said.”

The National Transportation Safety Board says the train was traveling at nearly 80 miles an hour — 50 miles an hour over the posted speed limit.

All the deaths have been contained to the train according to Pierce County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ed Troyer.

The train was on its inaugural run on a faster route from Seattle to Portland, Oregon, when 13 of its 14 cars jumped the tracks and tumbled onto highway, stranding motorists traveling in both directions.
