Sweater Weather: Must Haves for Fall

By Amanda Cohen on September 20, 2017

Fall is approaching, and you know what that means: fashion transition time! It’s about that time to put your shorts, crop tops, and frozen drinks in storage and to pull out your boots, jeans, sweaters, and hot apple cider.

Even though people love sweater weather, it can be difficult to decide what you need exactly for Fall. However, have no fear because I am here to tell you some of the fashion MUSTS for our (well, my) favorite season. So sit back and hold your apple cider tight, because I am here to tell you the fashion items you need in order to survive Fall.

Sweaters

First and foremost, you can never have too many sweaters. If someone tries to tell you otherwise, you have to stop them and tell them how wrong they are (if you don’t tell them you will be doing them a disservice). However, in all seriousness sweaters are great because most of them don’t ever go out of style and you can find good sweaters for good prices.

There are a few types of sweaters, and you should have multiples of each type. First, there are cardigans. Cardigans are great because they come in heavy fabrics and light fabrics, making them a staple for every season, especially Fall. Next, you have your casual cozy pullovers that come in long-sleeves and ¾ length sleeves. Finally, you have your heavy wool pullover sweaters. These sweaters are usually pricier, but they keep you nice and cozy on your walks to and from class. You should keep a few of these in your closet: some that you can wear casually, and some that you can wear to a nice steak dinner.

Black jeans

Second, you need a good pair of black jeans. I know this may sound tedious, but black jeans are all the rage and they can be dressed up and dressed down. I always suggest having few pairs of black jeans in your arsenal: a ripped pair, a non-ripped pair, and a high-rise pair.

Ripped jeans make everyone look super cool and trendy and, let’s be real, who doesn’t want to be trendy these days? You can wear the ripped pair with just about anything: sweaters, nice blouses, a casual graphic t-shirt, etc. Non-ripped jeans are great when you have to go to a restaurant or event in which wearing anything with rips is frowned upon. Lastly, high-rise black jeans are great for going out at night. Since they cover your belly-button, you can wear cropped tops and blouses with these jeans without showing off too much skin.

When it comes to choosing a shade of black jeans (yes, there are different shades of black) you want two dark pairs and a pair on the greyer side. A great look with black jeans is a chunky cream-colored oversized sweater.

Booties

Third, everyone should always have a good pair of booties in their closet. Having a pair of boots does not always suffice, and trust me, booties are completely different than boots. Booties are great in the Fall because they don’t add too much warmth to your feet, but you can also wear them in colder weather simply by adding a thin pair of sneaker socks.

Booties are easy to walk in and are a great option for class for all of my shorter friends out there. Booties can be worn casually, like when going to class, or you can wear them to nicer events — for example, a nice family dinner. Booties also make great bar shoes, just make sure you buy a cheaper pair that you can wear to the bars and won’t care if they get dirty.

This brings me to my next point. You should have two pairs of booties in your closet: a pair that you don’t care about for bar-hopping, and a pair that is super clean and goes right back into its duster bag after you wear them. If you have the budget to buy more than two pairs, buy a black pair, a brown pair, and a fun-colored pair like olive-green or red! You can find booties just about anywhere, even Amazon for great prices.

Cool jacket

Last, but certainly not least, a cool jacket. I know this sounds vague, but it’s difficult to even categorize what I’m trying to say because there are so many options when looking for a cool jacket. My personal favorites are oversized jean jackets, army jackets, cropped bomber jackets, oversized bomber jackets, and more.

The reason I love everything oversized, especially jackets, is because I like to be able to wear big sweaters underneath them … it’s all about layers my friends — live love layers, am I right? Jackets, like the ones listed above, are great because they give you some protection against the Fall chill, but not so much warmth where you feel like you just got out of a sauna when you walk indoors.

Some of my favorite colors and patterns to get these jackets in are army green, navy blue, camo, royal blue, dark red, and grey. A fun way to add a pop of color to these jackets is to find some with embroidered patches on them!

I hope that this list helps you when you do your Fall shopping and your Fall closet organizing. Use this list as an excuse to expand your closet and just truly embrace your inner fashionista. Peace, love, sweater weather!
