The Top 6 Dorm Essentials You Need This Year

By Alicia Geigel on August 25, 2017

It doesn’t matter if you are a freshman just moving into your dorm or a rising senior renewing the lease to your apartment, dorm and home essentials are a must!

When moving into a new place, the instinctual reaction for some of us is to purchase whatever items will make our new home look good, but these purchases do not always prove to be functional. As boring as it sounds, whether you are living on your own or with a roommate/roommates, your biggest objective should be to have items that can serve a multifunctional purpose, being both aesthetically appealing and handy at the same time!

If you are entering into the college world this year or perhaps are merely seeking advice on essential things you need for your dorm/apartment, check out my six recommendations below!

1. Nightlight with Bluetooth Speaker ($20): This wonderful item is the epitome of being multifunctional, cute, and handy. In your dorm, you’ll definitely want to have a nightlight for when you need to venture to the bathroom at night. An even cooler feature about this nightlight? It is color controlled through touch so not only do you have a cool variety of colors to choose from depending on your mood, but you can just simply touch the lamp to change them!

Perhaps the greatest feature of this lamp is the Bluetooth speakers; whether you are immersed in work and want amplified music to get you motivated or you want to boost the vibes of your party, Bluetooth speakers are amazing. Set the vibes with the awesome nightlight and you won’t regret it! Get it for $20 from Amazon here.

2. Soft Zippered Mini Sewing Kit ($6.70): I know that this may seem like one of those silly products that you get because your mom told you to and now it just rots in your closet somewhere, but I promise this is worth it! Maybe you’ll be lucky and never have to sew an article of clothing you have or maybe you’ll have one wrong move and tear your favorite pair of pants — cue the mini sewing kit!

This kit includes all the necessities to help you sew whatever piece of fabric/material and is conveniently small so you can travel with it! Find yours from Amazon here.

3. Self-Defense Key Chain ($9.95): Regardless of your age or gender, we all have a responsibility to protect ourselves from danger on and off campus. One of the best investments you can make during your college career is a self-defense key chain; for some it is mace and for others it’s a small pointy object. Regardless these items can get you out of some real trouble. We all carry a set of keys whether it be for our cars or our homes, so this can be one of the best ways to help protect yourself, as your keys are typically very accessible.

Objects like these not only increase your safety off campus but also come in handy for wherever you may be! The best part of this product is that the brand name, MUNIO, literally means “I defend” or “I protect.” You can’t get any better than that! Buy yours today and choose from a variety of styles from Amazon here.

4. AmazonBasics 5-Piece Bed-in-a-Bag ($38.99): One of the best products you can invest in is this 5-piece bed set. Unfortunately, today these kinds of sets cost a fortune and aren’t exactly made from the best materials. Each set includes one comforter, flat and fitted sheet, one sham, and a pillowcase. You get all the wonderful items in this set for less than $40; what a deal, am I right? Find yours in a variety of colors and styles here.

5. Everglow Clear White Wire Light Set ($11.10): One of the must-have products for your dorm/apartment this year is string lights. These lights are not only inexpensive but also help to set the vibes for your new place! You can choose from a bunch of colors; most people either stick with the multi-colored or the clear white, which you can find for cheap on Amazon here.

6. Black and Decker Easy Steam Iron ($14.99): Do your clothes have a bunch of wrinkles, putting you in a pickle? Worry not! A steam iron can take the wrinkles out of your clothes in no time using hot water that turns into steam, zapping them out right away! Steam irons are inexpensive and they work miraculous wonders on whatever articles of clothing you have! Get one for less than $15 on Amazon here.
