Society today is overly obsessed with judging the way people look, dress, and live their lives. You’ll see people get crucified on social media for being true to themselves, while others will get praised for emulating someone else. Filters no longer apply to just pictures; people are now becoming more and more comfortable with “applying filters” to themselves to fit into whatever trend they deem necessary for their personal “growth” and “popularity.”

Being true to oneself is becoming a lost art and we, as a people living in this world, have made it this way. We take it upon ourselves to persecute people who we feel do not fit into the “mold” of what we feel beauty, success, and having an in-shape body should look like. Our younger generation sees this behavior and begins to emulate it and judge others and themselves based off of this “society made” life scale. This is how cyber bullying and suicides become a plague amongst our young people.

I feel there aren’t enough global campaigns and outreach support groups that truly emphasize how crucial it is for one to love and feel comfortable in their own skin. Sure, there will be a creative hashtag trending telling you to love yourself and a few big named celebrities making Instagram videos emphasizing to “be true to you,” but that only lasts for 24 hours max until the next creative hashtag is trending. We tend to hop on the “cause of the moment,” while forgetting the everyday life causes like the vitality of self-worth.

We all must learn that it is always better to be an original than a copy. We all possess unique qualities that make us truly beautiful. There is always going to be someone that looks better than you, has a better a body and is smarter, but that doesn’t and shouldn’t make you feel less about yourself. We all have our days where we don’t feel like our best selves and hate how “fat” we look, but we should accept our flaws rather than feeling the need to hide or condemn them.

I am a firm believer in the cliché, “what makes us different is what makes us beautiful.” So, no matter what peer pressure you may feel to act a certain way or what trend is popular at the moment, always remember how critical it is to your life’s success to staying true to you.
