Hairstyle Changes: Yay or Nay?

By Kylie Exline on February 15, 2017

College students often like to switch up their hairstyles, such as after a recent breakup or a serious accomplishment, or because they happened to be in the mood for some killer or not so killer bangs. Regardless, a haircut can turn out really well or potentially not your best idea.

There are only a few ways to figure out if a hairstyle fits you. For one, this sort of requires that you actually go through with it. Or you can always try a wig on because we all know blonde isn’t necessarily for everyone. Sorry to disappoint with my honesty, guys.

To discover if a hairstyle suits you, try to focus on a few key elements. Continue reading below to know what to look for or maybe what to avoid.

Your confidence

At the end of the day, confidence is everything. Well, it counts for quite a bit. If you feel good, then you look good. And vice versa. You want to begin every day with a positive outlook and sometimes appearance plays a role in that, whether small or large.

When in search of a new hairstyle change, you usually desire a look that obviously makes you feel better and positive about yourself. It is rare to be on the lookout for a look that makes you feel unappealing. Because if being honest, we want to feel good and that does not usually accompany hating our hairstyle.

With the change, it should be evident of where your confidence lies. You should not be fully relying on the haircut to make your confidence skyrocket, but you shouldn’t be cursing your pixie cut for the next few months. Like I said before, it is not a bad idea to try on a similar hairstyle to see if you would maybe really like or hate it. It is solely up to you anyway.

Your reactions

Sometimes you just have to execute in order to see any form of a result. In this case, you have to get the haircut. But do not you fret; it’ll grow back, I promise. For this one, you will want to rely on close friends and family for their honest opinions. Or even a boy or girlfriend. Or the mailman, if you feel comfortable with their perspective. Who knows.

It is pretty easy to gauge other’s reactions to a major change. For instance, if you went from dark, super straight black hair to light, curly ginger, it should not be that difficult to judge the reactions from others. I mean, it is kind of a major change. Now keep in mind, this does not mean that you should fully rely on all other’s thoughts about your hair, but rather take it somewhat into account if you want to know how people view it.

More importantly, you do not want to forget about your own reaction. It is pretty vital considering it is you we are talking about here. Hairstyle happens to be something that we notice about someone relatively fast upon meeting. Just look out for your and everyone else’s reaction, and make sure to not take all of them to heart. You would only drive yourself crazy.

Your flexibility

I am not talking about your work hours of physical ability here, but rather with your hairstyle of course. In other words, what can you do with your hair? Are you limited to leaving it down 24/7, or can you actually braid it seven different ways? These are imperative questions, especially when you happen to be a girl. Or if you just have really long hair.

This is a super easy way to tell if a hairstyle suits you, given that you will either get super tired with it extremely fast or fall hard. You know, in terms of love and stuff. We all love looking decent with a very limited amount of time and effort going into looking presentable. Cue flexibility, folks.

This will express whether the change fits you because it will show in both your demeanor and personality. And as much as I hate to admit this, we kind of cannot wear our hair in a messy bun every single day of our lives because it is not always the most professional. I know, a complete bummer.

When looking for a new hairstyle change, we want to be happy of course, but also content with the actual decision. Knowing that you will enjoy the change for the next few months is pretty important than just thinking you will like it for the moment. Time to think about the future, people.

There are a few things to keep in mind with getting a haircut. You want to know how it will affect your confidence and if you wake up actually liking it most days. Then you want to see how others react to it and know if it looks entirely crazy. Lastly, the flexibility and maintenance are equally as important because we do live with a limit of time and patience.

If anything, think about it, make a decision, and remember that we all go through bad haircuts and can laugh about it in hindsight. Just maybe spend some extra time contemplating that rainbow style when sober.
