Housing Amenities to Help Students Focus on School

By Jordyn Austin on March 4, 2017

Housing plays a huge role in college life. Whether it is an apartment, townhouse or a dorm, the amenities included in housing can have a big impact on campus life, particularly helping students focus on school.

Many students and parents appreciate a “school first” motto when searching for housing. If the parents are paying for the housing, they especially may appreciate a place that encourages academic success through their provided amenities. Such provided amenities would not only actually benefit the students, but also show that property managers care about their residents’ academic success.

Here are a few amenities that you, property managers, can include in your housing community to help students focus on school.

Study Areas/Lounges

The first obvious amenity that will help students focus on school is a study area. Study areas and lounges are very beneficial to those who do not have a desk or who want a change of scenery from their bedroom. These are also great for students who need a quieter place to study than their room, without having to travel all the way to the library. Students love to have the convenience of things right in their rooms and housing properties because walks to and from building to building on campus can become cumbersome.

When property managers include study areas, this shows they care about the student’s academic success by providing them with a place to study and do homework. The study area should be well-lit and well ventilated with comfortable seating so the student can be comfortable and focused on the task at hand.

Vending machines could also be beneficial so students can have brain food on hand to continue studying or doing homework. Make sure your residents know that this amenity is available to them, so they can make use of it.

Media Room

Media rooms are a big success among students. The media room does not have to be extravagant with all the latest technology, but a room with computers and printers will have your property skyrocketing. Including a copy machine would be good too.

Laptops and computers are such an essential part of college life but unfortunately, not everyone can afford them. It is no secret that quality laptops and computers can be very expensive, not to mention the costs of maintaining a printer, paper, and ink. Providing this amenity will help students focus on school by giving them a means to properly get their work done. The media room should have plenty of outlets and the printers should always have the proper materials to function and be used properly.

Tutoring Services

When asked what amenities property managers could provide to help students focus on school, Destiny Lanier, a Youngstown State University freshman science major, said “tutoring services could be a very helpful tool.”

If property managers could provide tutors or even sources for tutors, this would be very beneficial to students. Some students are struggling in their studies and simply do not know where to search for resources to help them. If housing communities could provide those resources, it may help the students tremendously.

Outside tutoring could be the difference between a B and a D for a student. A lot of college students utilize tutoring when it is provided to them and many say it has helped them succeed in their classes.

Nursery/Daycare

Some students in college may be non-traditional students who have children. For those students, a housing community daycare would be so life changing. Location plays a huge role in where parents choose to place their children in daycare and having daycare services right in close proximity to your home would be very beneficial.

These non-traditional students need study time and help just like traditional students. Having someone watch their children would definitely help them focus on school. Children can be a handful, and juggling them on top of schoolwork can be a very daunting task. Childcare services can definitely help alleviate some stress and responsibility so the students can focus on school.

The childcare could include meal preparation, activities, snack time and even homework help for the older kids that need it. Taking these burdens off the non-traditional students would help them focus on school.

Fitness/Recreation Center

Even though this does not relate to schoolwork, it is so essential to have a place where students can wind down from school and refocus themselves if they need to. College can be very trying and if your housing community has a place for recreation and fitness this can enhance the housing experience, especially for those who need a little break from school. If you are worried that the center will be a distraction and students may spend more time in there than they should, you could always create hours of operation. Close the center by 8 or 9 p.m. so students don’t use it to avoid school or procrastinate work.

Incorporate the above amenities into your student housing properties to help students focus on and succeed in college!
