FSU Trailblazer: Jorge Mejia
This week, I got the chance to interview Jorge Mejia. Besides being Relay for Life Chair for Circle K International, Jorge is funny, kind, and a down to Earth type of guy. Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce you to the sweetest guy I know, Jorge Mejia.
What is your hometown?
JM: Lakeworth, Florida.
What’s your major?
What year of school are you in?
JM: I’m a Sophomore.
Why did you pick your major?
JM: It’s a funny story actually. My initial major was a Pre- Vet sort of thing. I saw that FSU didn’t offer it so I was just honest with myself and went with Geography. I also chose it because I had three years of experience taking classes of geography and I actually liked the classes, so I just took the chance and went with it. I also picked my major because I wanted to make a difference. Honestly my inner desire is to leave a legacy in this world. Something that is worthwhile, helpful, and embodies me in a sense. Throughout my childhood, most of the careers that I chose embodied my vision of being a legacy and helping my community. As I continued to grow, some of these career paths and majors didn’t seem to fit me (academically and personally) and Geography was really interesting to me, especially throughout high school. I feel very passionate about Geography.
What is your favorite thing about FSU?
JM: I really like the campus a lot. It really looks “at home.” It just felt like I was home and I also like some of the people that I’ve met. Also, the faculty. I really like them and they seem to care about their students a lot.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
JM: If I’m being real with you, I like to watch Anime in my spare time. I like watching TV shows, like The Flash, and I like to cuddle and play with animals, especially kittens.
How would you describe yourself?
JM: Um, 5’5’’, Hispanic, just kidding!
Um I don’t know, kind of awkward with my first interactions. But when you get to know me, I tend to be charismatic. I try to be funny, sometimes it works in my favor and sometimes it doesn’t, depending on the audience.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
JM: In ten years I see myself having a Masters, doing what I love, hopefully something that I really love. I haven’t chosen a career path so far. Some of the options that I have in mind are an urban planner and a location analysts. I also see myself having a family, a house, “The American Dream.” Well in 10 years let me see, I kind of want to start my own business but I’m not sure, I’m not a business major.
What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment during your time at FSU?
JM: Doing Relay for Life chair for Circle K International, which is what I’m doing now. Also, getting my first two jobs.
If you could go back and change something in your time at FSU, would you? If so, what would you change?
JM: Yes and it would be rushing during my Fall semester.
Which celebrity do you look up to the most and why?
JM: Kanye west. I just feel like he’s a pioneer in everything. He doesn’t consider himself an artist, but an entrepreneur. He has no limitations.
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve eaten?
JM: A bull’s testicles. I didn’t know it was bull’s testicles until after. It was in Honduras because I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to eat that here. So the story goes: My uncle was having a barbecue and most of it consisted of rice, beans, tortillas, and A LOT of meat. My uncle told me to try this meat so he handed it to me. I ate it and it was really sturdy and tough, but it was still delicious. I was told later that evening that it was bull’s testicles and that’s how I came to experience what bull’s testicles taste like.
What is your favorite four legged creature and why?
JM: Cats because they’re soft and some of them have the cutest faces and I don’t know, I think it just might be a phase.
Tell me something you would happily do again and why?
JM: I would relive The 1975 concert because the whole day went perfect. I traveled to Miami with my girlfriend, which was an interesting experience. Experiencing “real city” traffic, dilemmas, and just seeing Miami was interesting. It was kind of fun, not going to lie, though really frustrating. After an hour or so of finding a parking spot, my girlfriend and I waited in line and just being surrounded by fans who loved the same artist that I adored was awesome. On top of that, I got to experience my first concert EVER. The concert felt like a whole religious experience; singing all the songs that I loved, actually seeing The 1975, and fangirling with my girlfriend.
Is there anything you would like to add that I might not have thought to ask you?
JM: I wish you asked me what my greatest weakness was. My biggest weakness is my inability to interact with people and maintain friendships.
