Steven Universe Songs (and Why People Should Watch the Show)

From Left to Right: Garnet, Steven, Amethyst, and Pearl

Steven Universe is a great show. It may even be one of the greatest shows of the 2010′s. Its a light, happy show with funny characters and beautiful art. It’s also not afraid to take on darker themes, and it does this without losing its happy, light atmosphere. There’s also diverse characters, especially one of the best representations of gay characters I have ever seen in a TV show. But today I want to talk about something else the show is great at. Its music. Its songs are beautiful, short, and have so many meanings in them. So here are my ten favorite Steven Universe Songs, and what they say about the show. Spoiler Warning.

10. On The Run

“I Wish that I could say that there no better place than home.

But homes a place that I have never known.

That’s why were on the run…”

One of the things that really makes this a great song is how we have two people singing the same song with completely different meanings. Steven sings song so happily and innocently, while Amethysts song has a darker meaning that we find out as the episode goes on. Even thought it starts out with her and Steven singing happily as they hitch a ride from “the cool kids” of Beach City, it ends with them on a train, as she looks out sadly at what they pass by. Its the first hint that she doesn’t feel like she’s accepted by the other gems, and it has a lot of meaning by the end of the episode. Also makes Garnet’s “We kept Amethyst” joke and Pearls reaction seem very different in hindsight.

9. Do it For Her

“Deep Down, you know, you weren’t built for fighting.

But it doesn’t mean your not prepared to try….

What they, don’t know, is your real advantage,

When you live for someone you’re prepared to die.”

This song, like the show, has moments where it gets extremely disturbing. We go from Pearl singing about giving it her all to her singing about giving her life up for Rose. And then she begins encouraging Connie to do the same. There’s a lot of really cool things going on, Pearl teaching Connie how to use a sword and showing holograms of her defending Rose, but there’s also Connie starting to listen to Pearls advice as she sings about how she’ll give up her life for Steven. Just like the show, beautiful, awesome, and occasionally a little dark.

8.Be Wherever You Are

“Isn’t it nice to find yourself somewhere different,

Whoa, why don’t you let yourself just be wherever you are?”

This song is just cute. Its just Steven playing his Ukulele on an island. Meanwhile we get to see him having fun living on a deserted island with his friend Sadie and his “friend” Lars. There’s some cute little bonding going on between the three of them, and the song itself is just beautiful. The show has a lot of beautiful moments like this.

7. Peace and Love on Planet Earth

“I think your all insane!

But I guess I am too…

anyone would be if they were stuck on Earth with you.”

This song is also cute. And a huge Spoiler. This song shows how one of the antagonists is beginning to reform. And its a great example of how the show can have a character grow just through song.

6. Giant Woman

“All I want to do

is see you turn into

a giant woman (A giant woman!)”

This song is about Steven trying to convince too of his friends to fuse with each other, which requires them to dance with each other.  Aside from being a fun song, it has the same kind of… lesbian overtones that the show has. He even says “You might even like being together, but if you don’t it wont be forever”.  The two characters don’t end up together, but they do learn they can work together and fuse with each other when they need to.

5. Strong In the Real Way

“Why do you have to look up to her-

Aside from in a literal sense-

Don’t you know that a power that big

Comes at a bigger expense”

This song starts off about how Pearl (the perfectionist) is unhappy  that Garnet and Amethyst fused together on their last mission. Since Amethyst is wild and Garnet is… mysterious, Sugilite (their fusion) is out of control. And Pearl is unhappy that Steven respects her brute strength over Pearl’s intellect. Steven overhears this then starts singing to pump up his friends with their exercise plan in an attmept to get stronger so that Pearl and Sugilite will respect him.  Its sad and sweet at the same time.

4. Tower of Mistakes

“I guess you’re better off with her

I think she’s better for you”

Pearl isn’t the only one who gets jealous. After Garnet tells Amethyst she won’t fuse Sugilite for a while (because of the relatively minor destruction she caused last time), Amethyst watches as Garnet and Pearl fuse Sardonyx. Unlike Pearl her song is about how she knows Garnet is better with Pearl than her, but she’s just as sad and jealous as Pearl was.  Watching them fuse over and over again is making her sad and causing her to feel worthless, and that’s what Amethyst is singing about.

 3. What Can I Do For You

“Human man, you are so much fun

I didn’t plan, on finding you quite this entertaining”

Rose Quartz is usually refereed to as beloved by everyone. No one can remember her faults. And that makes it seem like people are expecting too much of Steven because he can’t compare to his dead mother. This song is one of the few times she has a flaw. She doesn’t understand human relationships and emotions. She loves humans, but she doesn’t understand them. And you can see Greg’s (Steven’s dad) slowly realizes this as she’s singing. Its nice to see that Rose has flaws and her not being able to act human makes her seem more human. Plus at the end Pearl fuses with Rose and its fun to watch Pearl get to fuse with the love of her life for a little while.

2.Something Entirely New

“It wasn’t quite me

and It wasn’t quite you

I think we made something entirely new”

Its two Lesbians singing about how much they love each other after they fuse for the first time. We get to see Ruby and Sapphire explore earth after running away from the Home world Gems who want to kill Ruby for accidentally fusing with Sapphire. Its just cute and romantic.

1. Stronger than you

“This is who we are,

This is what I am,

and if you think you can beat me you need to think again.

The biggest spoiler in season one was that one of the Chrystal Gems was actually a fusion. As it turns out, Garnet was the fusion of Ruby and Sapphire the whole time. She is literally the embodiment of a lesbian relationship. Its awesome. The entire song is her singing about how she is “made of love” and how that makes her stronger than Jasper (the villain she’s fighting). She sings about how she’s a feeling, a conversation between Ruby and Sapphire and even talks about how she will never die as long as Ruby and Sapphire still love each other. Its beautiful and and its song with a lot of love and care.

Steven Universe is a great show with fun characters, lots of diversity, and great music. Even kids shows can be deep and terrifying sometimes. There’s so much love put into the show and it is reflected. The show can work its way into anyone’s heart. Plus its nice to see gay characters be adorable.
