I'm Makeup Obsessed And Proud Of It

By Erin Lin on November 3, 2014

I’ll admit it, I’m a little bit obsessed. Place me in a makeup store and I’ll be there for hours taking a good look at all the new holiday palettes and swatching new blushes and eyeliners even though I have enough in my own bag for any formal, girl’s night out or casual day look.

Bronzers, pigments, highlights, mascaras, foundations, nail polishes, shadows, lipsticks, brushes…dare I say it? I love it all. Do I need it? No, of course not. Can I show my au naturel face in public or do I hide from sunlight like a vampire if I end up not wearing any makeup? I can definitely walk around with no makeup and I don’t feel awful about it.

Makeup was a gradual process for me; I started off with a tiny bit of eyeliner in high school and then added a nice brown eye shadow on my lids and then it progressed into coating my lashes with mascara. I rarely put on foundation unless I know I have to dress up real fancy and get a lot of pictures taken.

On a normal day, I’ll do my eyes and head out the door. But everytime I find myself in a makeup store or watching YouTube tutorials from beauty gurus, I always find myself apologizing to my friends who catch me in the act (as if I had just been caught performing some heinous act). I apologize because it’s embarrassing for me to fall into the trap of the cosmetics industry.

We all know it and we all hear a lot of hate from people saying, “they sell a bunch of stuff to make you ‘pretty’ and the more you buy, the more you need it to feel good about yourself” or ”your skin needs to breathe and the more foundation you use to cover up is just going to make your skin/acne worse and you’ll end up buying more foundation to cover the new acne that’s surfaced because of your makeup” or ”you get tricked into thinking you need this to look presentable when really they just want your money.”

And boy, do I know all of that. I know that I will never, ever need bronzer or find eyeliner as the essential life ingredient to making me happy. I know that every single time I swipe my debit card and buy an incredible amount of makeup that my wallet cries a little and begs me to stop killing it with useless things that I’m only going to wipe off of my face at the end of the day.

I’m a little bit ashamed of why I love makeup so much because there are so many negative connotations associated with an infatuation with makeup: fake, superficial, girly girl, unintelligent, air headed, etc. It’s a hobby of mine and an interest and no matter how superficial I know people will see me as, all I can say is that I seriously just love painting my face.

It’s fun, I like the pretty colors and I like seeing what different combinations and looks I can do. Sometimes, it’s nice to look in the mirror and appreciate your work, but other times it’s nice to see your artistic side.

And can we quit saying all this mumbo jumbo about how easy it is to apply makeup and to learn how to do it? Of course with the help of tutorials and the internet nowadays, learning things is more convenient. But it also takes skill and a knowledge of your own facial structures to understand how to do your makeup well.

Don’t look down on beauty experts and don’t try to assume that a girl or a guy is this or that because they like doing makeup as a hobby or even a passion.

Of course loving your own skin and how your face looks naturally is the healthiest and most beautiful cosmetic a girl or guy can ever want, but having some fun once in a while won’t hurt anyone. Whether you love your daily eyeliner and bronzer, ditch the cosmetics for a little more shut eye, or dust off your makeup once in a blue moon, you my dear, are beautiful all day, everyday.

Cheers to a beauty! xoxoxo
